Samsung Unveils Galaxy Z8 Foldable Lineup as Competition From Apple Looms
LONDON — Samsung has introduced its newest generation of foldable smartphones, expanding its premium lineup as the company prepares for increased competition from Apple, which is widely expected to enter the foldable phone market later this year.
The South Korean technology giant announced the new devices during a launch event in London, unveiling three foldable models in the Galaxy Z8 Series.
Samsung Expands Its Foldable Portfolio
For the first time, Samsung's foldable lineup includes three flagship models:
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra – $2,099
Galaxy Z Fold8 – $1,899
Galaxy Z Flip8 – $1,199
Previous Galaxy foldable generations typically featured two models: the Galaxy Z Fold, which unfolds like a book into a tablet-sized display, and the Galaxy Z Flip, which folds vertically in the style of classic flip phones.
This year, Samsung has added the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, positioning it as the company's most advanced foldable smartphone with premium specifications and features.
Apple Expected to Increase Competition
Industry analysts believe Samsung's latest launch comes at a crucial moment.
Reports continue to suggest that Apple could introduce its first foldable iPhone before the end of 2026, potentially reshaping the premium foldable smartphone market.
Ben Wood, Chief Analyst and Chief Marketing Officer at CCS Insight, said Apple's arrival would significantly raise consumer awareness of foldable devices.
According to Wood, Samsung created the modern foldable smartphone category when it introduced the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. However, Apple's entry would likely accelerate mainstream adoption and intensify competition among premium smartphone manufacturers.
Higher Prices Reflect Rising Component Costs
Samsung's newest foldables are more expensive than last year's models.
The company has raised prices by approximately $100 on several devices, largely due to higher manufacturing costs.
Current pricing includes:
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: $100 more than the previous Galaxy Z Fold7.
Galaxy Z Flip8: $100 more expensive than the Galaxy Z Flip7.
Much of the increase is being driven by the soaring cost of memory chips, which have experienced strong demand from artificial intelligence applications while global supply remains tight.
Despite these challenges, analysts noted that Samsung limited the price increases compared with what many expected.
According to Wood, this suggests Samsung is absorbing part of the higher production costs rather than passing the entire increase on to consumers.
He added that the Ultra model's price exceeding $2,000 will likely become one of the biggest talking points following the launch.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Introduces a New Design
One of the most notable additions to the lineup is the Galaxy Z Fold8, which introduces a different approach to Samsung's Fold series.
Although it still opens like a book, the Fold8 features a smaller overall design and a 4:3 display aspect ratio, which Samsung says provides a more comfortable viewing experience for reading, multitasking, and watching videos.
Industry observers believe the new form factor may also position Samsung ahead of Apple, with rumors suggesting Apple's first foldable iPhone could adopt a similarly wider display.
Premium Performance Across the Fold Series
Both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, delivering flagship-level performance for multitasking, gaming, and AI-powered features.
However, Samsung differentiates the two models with several premium upgrades on the Ultra version.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra offers:
A more advanced triple-camera system.
A larger battery for longer usage.
Additional premium hardware enhancements.
Choosing Between the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra
The price difference between the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra is $200, which is relatively small within the premium smartphone segment.
Analysts believe Samsung will need to clearly explain the value of the standard Fold8 to encourage buyers to choose it instead of upgrading to the Ultra model.
Because the Ultra includes more advanced hardware for only a modest price increase, consumers may naturally gravitate toward the higher-end device unless Samsung successfully differentiates the standard Fold8's target audience.
Samsung Looks to Defend Its Foldable Leadership
Samsung has dominated the global foldable smartphone market for several years, but the competitive landscape is rapidly changing.
With Apple widely expected to launch its own foldable iPhone, Samsung's expanded Galaxy Z8 lineup represents both a product refresh and a strategic effort to strengthen its position before one of its biggest rivals enters the category.
The company's broader lineup, improved hardware, and expanded design options demonstrate its commitment to maintaining leadership in the foldable smartphone market as competition intensifies throughout 2026.
